WILTSHIRE JUNIOR CUP – 12th October 2024

Durrington FC 1 Warminster Town Reserves FC 6

Wiltshire Junior Cup action took centre stage on Saturday afternoon as all bar five Trowbridge & District League teams were in Cup action, one of the ties of the round was the all Trowbridge leagues affair between Second Division leaders Durrington FC and first division Warminster Town Reserves who at the same stage of the competition last term suffered a surprise exit.

Warminster avoided another potential banana skin, a dominant performance saw Jon Los and Phil Stockley’s side inflict Durrington with a first loss of the campaign, with the visitors to Salisbury cruising to a 6-1 win.

Josh Drury put Warminster ahead and his second of the contest made it 2-0. Tom Ball and then James Bowden added further goals before half time.

After the break two more goals from Tom Ball saw him complete his hat trick before Ryan Moore scored from the penalty spot to hand Durrington their consolation.

Calne Athletic FC 3 Trowbridge Wanderers FC 0

The second of three all Trowbridge League encounter saw Calne Athletic FC welcome second division stablemates Trowbridge Wanderers FC to their Beversbrook base.

Calne Athletic locked horns with Trowbridge Wanderers at Beverbrook in this Wiltshire FA Junior Cup fixture with Calne eager to exact some revenge on their sole league loss at the hands of their opponents.

In what has been a common theme this season, Calne started the game strongly and within a few minutes Jake Mizen found himself through on goal but his poked shot towards goal was scrambled away for a corner.

The opening goal was not far behind though when Wanderers conceded a free kick on the right-hand side and Spencer Smart came over from his left wingback position to take the set-piece.

Smart’s delivery was the perfect in-swinging cross that left Wanderers’ goalkeeper Liam Savin unable to move in order to anticipate a touch from either an opponent or his defence and although Karl Sharratt did attack the cross it went in untouched direct from the free kick.

The lead was soon doubled just a few moments later, good work down the left involving Archie Green saw the ball bounce to Trowbridge & District League Division 1 top scorer Ewan McConnachie and his precise half volley from 20 yards left Savin once again rooted to the spot as the ball nestled into the left-hand side of his goal.

Wanderers did create their first chance of the half when a long ball from defence caught the Calne Athletic rear guard out and Ashton Buckland found himself through on goal but his tame effort was gratefully gathered by Tom Bull in the Calne goal when the deficit should have probably have been halved.

There was still time for Ben Cartmell to rise highest at the back post to meet a Jack Boyd-Cox corner but his headed effort was straight at Savin.

The second half was not quite as fluent as the first period, the first real chance of note coming midway through the half following a ball over the top from defence and McConnachie attempting to lob Savin from quite a distance and not getting the right connection.

As the match petered out to the final few minutes and maybe Wanderers realising that their race was run, a couple more chances materialised for the home team.

Some great work from the evergreen Tyler Smith saw him lay off to McConnachie whose curling effort was saved by Savin but McConnachie had the final say when substitute Joe Pollard was played through by Jake Mizen and he scrambled the ball away from the approaching Savin to square the ball for McConnachie to slam home the third goal for a decisive victory to see Calne Athletic progress to the next round.
