DIVISION TWO CUP

Trowbridge Wanderers FC 6 South Newton & Barford Hornets 5 AET&Penalties

With teams from the Gooding Accounts sponsored Trowbridge League, Second Division, completing their league programme at the end of the month, the league have for the first time since the 2017/2018 campaign introduced the Division Two Cup competition, to give teams a a couple of extra fixtures.

The first of match of the event was an eliminator between Trowbridge Wanderers FC and South Newton & Barford Hornets and if the remainder of the competition is as exciting at the Preliminary Round clash that saw the teams need a penalty shoot out to find a winner, it promises to be well worth it for the organisers.

Luke Ransome put Wanderers ahead on 43 minutes and for most of the remainder of the tie, his goal looked as if it would be enough to set Wanderers up with a quarter-final meeting with Pilot FC, however the Hornets got themselves back on level terms in the 73rd minute, Stephen Perry restoring parity at 1-1 to send the game to extra time.

Neither team were able to conjure up a winner in the 30 additional minutes, so the tie went the dreaded penalty shoot out lottery where Stephen Perry, Owen Keel, Damon McGuinness and Dan Targett scored from the spot for the Hornets.

Rich Elkins, Nick Mead, Lewis Howe, Marcus Faint and Bradley Collier netted from 12 yards for Wanderers, whose keeper saved a Connor Dawkins effort before Liam Harvey missed the target for Hornet’s to give the hosts victory.
