DIVISION TWO ROUND UP – WEEK 12

Calne Athletic FC 2 Trowbridge Wanderers FC 2

With Durrington FC starting to romp clear at the top of the Gooding Accounts sponsored Trowbridge League Division Two, standings, the chasing pack that are currently led by Calne Athletic FC are well aware that every point will be vital in their bid to catch the runaway leaders.

Athletic at home to Trowbridge Wanderers FC will see their 2-2 draw again Jake Little’s side as two points lost, rather than one gained and that’s despite them coming from behind to secure their share of the spoils.

Trowbridge Wanderers made the trip to Beversbrook for the second time in three weeks for their third meeting of the season.

Athletic have been good starters this season but this week they seemed to be unable to pick up the intensity although they did fashion the first chance of the match when Karl Sharratt squared to Charlie Street but he skewed his effort wide from inside the box.

But it was Wanderers who were the better of the two sides for much of the 1st half and they were unlucky not to go ahead when Lewis Balkwill hit a low driving effort that came back off of the upright.

Just a couple of minutes later, they also nearly broke the deadlock albeit this time when Balkwill’s mishit cross hit the top of the crossbar.

Calne did grow into the 1st half and it was the who broke the deadlock when a free kick from the left-hand side, delivered by Jack Boyd-Cox was met by Oli Andresen at the back post for 1-0.

This was the start of a better period for Calne and they really should have doubled the lead when Tyler Smith found himself through on goal but he hit a tame shot straight at Liam Savin.

The next chance fell to goal scorer Andresen who picked up the ball in defence on the halfway line and jinked his way through to the edge of the area but once again Savin was relieved to gather a weak shot.

The match then seesawed back into Trowbridge’s favour, initially when a poor free kick from deep found its way back to left back Callum Radwell who fired the ball from the best part of 40 yards and saw the ball cannon back off of the crossbar.

Sam Peacock was then called into action twice in quick succession, firstly rushing out and saving with his legs before retreating back to his goal line and making a superb full stretch save to deny Balkwill once again.

From the resulting corner, Wanderers were rewarded for their pressure when Athletic were unable to clear their lines and Elliott Tomkins was on hand to bundle home from the goalmouth scramble for the equaliser just before half time.

The second half was a bit more of a subdued, scrappy and less eventful half with neither team really able to create anything of note until midway through, substitute Adam Cooke testing the impressive Peacock in the Athletic goal twice, one from a speculative effort from long range that again showed Peacock’s reactions to be on point.

With 71 minutes in the clock Wanderers went in front when Adam Cooke played in Luke Ransome who converted into the bottom right-hand corner.

Athletic tried to pick themselves up and although their football was not the free-flowing game we have seen through the previous weeks, they mustered an equaliser of their own in the final ten minutes when Spencer Smart recycled his own corner and arrowed a cross into the box which found Ben Cartmell to glance home to set up a tense finale.

Although there was time for one more chance, Calne Athletic will be indebted to Sam Peacock who pulled off another save from Lewis Blakeill as the score remained 2-2.

Freshford United Reserves FC 3 Avon Valley FC 6

After victories in their previous three outings Freshford United Reserves FC were denied a fourth straight victory by Avon Valley FC who trip to Brown’s Park saw them pick up all the points on offer thanks to a 6-3 triumph.

Grant Organ who was making his debut for Freshford gave them a 4th minute lead and his debut got even better 6 minutes later when he doubled the hosts lead.

Avon Valley’s response was brilliant as they restored parity, thanks to goals from Tristian Jones and they were back on level terms just before the half hour mark, Tristan Jones (21 minutes) and Jamie Hinton (29 minutes) scoring.

Freshford reclaimed the lead on the stroke of half time, Edmund Little finding the net from an assist from his dad Mike Little who was playing in goal this week, rather than his usual position of striker.

After the break Avon Valley moved into top gear and scored 4 unanswered goals, Marcus Read restoring parity on 48 minutes and Jake Quinn putting them into a 4-3 lead in the 51st minute, Lewis Blackmore came of the bench to add number 5, before a second from Jake Quinn made up Valley’s half dozen.

Pilot FC 2 Bishops Cannings Reserves FC 3

Bishops Cannings Reserves FC overturned a 2-1 interval deficit to claim a 3-2 victory away at Pilot FC who looked to heading for a draw until Bailey Penney popped up with a late winner for Cannings.

Bishops Cannings made the best possible start and took the lead on 2 minutes, Liam Carter setting up Jack Sheridan who made it 1-0.

Pilot drew level on 10 minutes, Jiffin Gomez making it 1-1. With the first half drawing to a close Pilot got themselves in front, Adam Meakin scoring his second goal for the club to give them a half time lead.

Bishops Cannings were back on level terms in the 68th minute, Alex Parrish converting a William Cook assist to restore parity.

With time running out and a share of the spoils looking likely, Bailey Penney who came off the bench conjured up an 85th minute winner for Bishops Cannings.

Durrington were 2-0 up at the interval through goals from Tyler Pavey and Olly Mason.

Three more goals followed in the second half, Danny Finnigan who also saw red made it 3-0, a second from Tyler Pavey took it to 4-0 before Aiden Fitzgerald bagged the fifth of the afternoon for the runaway league leaders.
