Bromham FC 1 Calne Athletic FC 1
BROMHAM & CALNE ENDS ALL SQUARE
Another fixture that involved two of the more fancied teams in the Trowbridge & District League Division 1 promotion race and with this also being about as local as a local derby could get, the expectation was for an exciting match at Jubilee Field between Bromham & Calne Athletic.
Athletic, fresh of the back of their free scoring humbling of Bishop’s Cannings last week started the brighter of the two teams and many thought that Karl Sharratt’s 25 yard strike in the 5th minute had opened the scoring but his effort had hit the top corner netting just the wrong side of the post.
Although Calne were keeping up most of the pressure, chances for both teams were at a premium due to excellent defending by both teams keeping the goalkeepers relatively inactive.
With 35 minutes on the clock the wait for an opening goal was over and it was worth the anticipation.
A cheap free kick was given away by the Bromham defence, 35, maybe 40 yards from the goal allowing Aidan Hawkins to step up and unleash a thunderous effort into the top right-hand corner giving goalkeeper Dan Wheeler no chance in the Bromham goal.
Bromham were offering some bright moments on the break but there was nothing else from either team that tested either keeper and the away team took their slender lead into half time.
It felt like roles reversed in the second half, possibly the notorious Jubilee Field slope having a hand but it was Bromham who were seeing a bit more of the ball and probing for the equaliser.
A chance came their way when the ball was squeezed through to substitute Archie Harris but Thomas Bull got down low to his right to palm the away and keep Calne Athletic in front.
In what could be viewed as a major turning point in the match, Athletic felt like they were denied a penalty when a deep free kick from Charlie Street fell to Oli Andresen to attempt an overhead kick but was upended by what looked to be a strong challenge but the referee waiver play on. Andresen subsequently needing to be replaced due being injured in the process.
And this setback arguably proved costly as with effectively a new back three now being deployed by Calne, Bromham pulled themselves level when a deep free kick was not dealt with well enough and the ball dropped to Archie Harris to smash home from five yards and restore parity.
There was still time for both Bull and Wheeler to be called into action and keep their respective sides in the match, Wheeler needing to be alert twice in the final moments to keep out efforts from Archie Green and goal scorer Hawkins keeping the score at 1-1 and both teams taking a share of the spoils.
While Athletic felt aggrieved by not having a penalty in their favour, Bromham felt that on two occasions they were denied two perfectly good goals that were ruled out for offside, they first saw a Oliver Graham effort that would have made it 1-1 ruled out. The second came at the death and would have seen Tobei Beattie’s strike win it for the hosts had the offside flag not been raised.

DEBUT TO REMEMBER FOR LINCOLN CANNINGS
