STIFFS HAVE NO ANSWER TO FRESHFORD ONSLAUGHT
Gooding Accounts Ltd sponsored-Trowbridge & District Football League, Second Division, leaders Freshford United opened up a 10 gap over the chasing pack as they continue to steamroller their way to becoming champions.
Chris Birleson’s sides 7-1 victory over The Stiffs was their 12th win in their 14 league outings to date.
Reece Mortimer and Mark Maguire continued their purple patch in front of goal, with both players bagging themselves a hat trick.
Mortimer got the ball rolling for Freshford, Mark Maguire made it 2-0 before Mortimer added their third of the afternoon. Maguire netted his second of the game and Freshford’s fourth before Billy Wilkins-Pratt pulled a goal back for the Stiffs.
With the race now on for the match ball, it was Maguire who beat his strike partner to the honour, when his 15th goal of the campaign made it 5-1.
The goals may have dried up in the second half, but a Jake Hale effort and a third of the match for Reece Mortimer that took his tally to 16, sealed the villagers 7-1 win.

HOLT MOVE UP TO SECOND AFTER LATEST WIN
A 6-0 home win for Holt FC over Staverton Rangers FC have seen Nigel Tripp’s side rise to second place in the standings.
Archie Robertson had an excellent game for the hosts, scoring twice and assisting two others. Robertson’s strike on 8 minutes set the villagers on their way. Robbie Tripp doubled Holt’s lead on 35 minutes with Robertson providing the assist. Peter Andrews added a third in the 42nd minute after good work from Matt Goodwill.
Staverton kept their hosts at bay in the second half until Archie Robertson fired home from the penalty spot to make it 4-0 on 65 minutes. Matt Goodwill made the most of another Robertson assist for 5-0 in the 80th minute. It was left to substitute Charlie Smith to round things off, with a minute remaining his first goal of the season made it 6-0.
South Newton & Barford Hornets FC 2 Aces FC 3
COLLINGS NETS ACES WINNER
With South Newton & Barford Hornets FC and opponents Aces FC returning to action after missing the last two weekends, both teams could have been forgiven for any rustiness they may have had.
Aces who won the first meeting of the teams 3-1 at the start of November emerged victorious for a second time, a 3-2 triumph for Mike Robbins side saw them move up to fourth spot in the standings.
In a thrilling first half that ended 2-2 and saw Sam Street’s 30th minutes opener for South Newton & Barford Hornets cancelled out by a Sam Collings goal to level matters. Aces then took the lead via a Marc Harewood strike on for the hosts to restore parity on the stroke of half time through Robbie Harrison.
Although the second half didn’t produce another goal fest, it was littered with chances, with Aces threatening with each attack and they should have scored several times. In the end they had to settle for a second of the afternoon from Sam Collings wrapped up all 3 points for Aces.
