WILKINS STRIKE SEND WESTBURY INTO QUARTERS

A well taken strike from 16-year-old Joe Wilkins proved to be the decisive moment in Westbury United Reserves 1 – 0 win over The Duke in the 2nd round of The Knockout Cup – sponsored by Chantry Digital Ltd.

As predicted, this was a very close contest and as both teams fought to gain control Westbury had their keeper to thank in the first half as he pulled off two smart saves to deny the newly crowned Division One champions.

The second half started the same with both teams fighting for possession but few clear-cut chances being created. Westbury’s best chance came on the hour mark when a break down the left saw a chance ballooned over the bar. On 67 minutes the breakthrough came when a ball over the top caught The Dukes defence square, 16-year-old Joe Wilkins latched onto the through ball and calmly slotted the ball home.

The Duke came back fighting and piled on the pressure looking for an equaliser and after a series of corners saw the ball bounce back off the Westbury crossbar.

A well organised Westbury defence stood firm to deny the wave of attacks to see them safely through to a quarter final match against Hilperton United this coming weekend.

Also, this weekend, 19th March the other three quarter finals of The Knockout Cup – sponsored by Chantry Digital Ltd are taking place. Freshford United are hosting Potterne FC, Melksham Town Development are playing Seend United and The Stiffs are looking to cause an upset as they welcome Heytesbury. All matches are kicking off at 2.30pm
