Win takes Westbury off the bottom – Division 2 Midweek Round up

A 3-0 victory for Westbury United ‘A’ away at Bradford Town ‘A’ on Tuesday evening was enough to see the victors move off the foot of the Trowbridge Windows sponsored Trowbridge League Division Two table at the expense of their hosts who slipped to the bottom of the pile.

On what had to have been one of the hottest days for a very long time saw the match start at a blistering pace, with only a smart save from Westbury keeper Matthew Dew denying Luke Willmot from giving the hosts the perfect start.

As the game flowed from end to end Westbury really should have broken the deadlock on 12 minutes, but with only the keeper to beat Josh Lewis fluffed his lines and missed what was a sitter.

Bradford were next to go close to breaking the deadlock when Tyler Robinson flashed a shot across the face of goal which just needed a touch from one of his teammates and it would have been 1-0, but it wasn’t too be as the ball went out for a goal kick.

Midway through the half Josh Whitehead did all the hard work and found himself one-on-one with Bradford keeper Dom Cook who stood up well to the oncoming striker, whose effort looked goal bound, but cannoned of the post and into the grateful hands of the keeper.

Westbury finally got their noses in front on 39 minutes when a Josh Lewis corner found the head of Owen Hornsby whose effort took a deflection to beat the despairing keeper Cook who tried in vain to claw the ball to safety.

Almost straight from the restart Bradford should have been level, but Harvey Frisby wasted a great chance to make it 1-apiece.

With the first half drawing to a close, Westbury doubled their lead with a delightful finish from Josh Whitehead, who skipped beyond his marker and curled an excellent strike beyond keeper Cook.

There was still time left for Bradford to claw a goal back, but again chances came and went with Max Hopcraft and Lewis Baden failing to test keeper Dew from close range as the first half finished 2-0 in favour of the visitors.

After what was a lively first half, the second period failed to ignite as neither team registered a shot on goal until the 80th minute when Harrison Trevor conjured up a piece of individual brilliance, after controlling the ball with his first touch, his second saw him power home a stunning strike from 20 yards to make it 3-0.

Bradford went in search of a late equaliser and nearly got one, only for keeper Dew to deny Jake Muster what would have been the goal of the evening, but by the time he kept out his long range strike the points were already in the bag and Westbury returned home with their first win of the season on the board.
